I have always feared needles, to this day often passing out at a blood draw. Despite this,I utilize the power of needles everyday as an acupuncturist. I am awed by acupuncture's marvelous effectiveness, and I work hard to make treatments a pain-free experience. Because I want something that works, and yet produces the least amount of discomfort, I have been drawn to, and now specialize in, Japanese style acupuncture.
A difference you may note in a treatment with me is that Japanese acupuncturists feel around a lot before needling acupuncture points. A natural outcome of this approach is that there tends to be a lot of interaction between acupuncturist and patient. I will often ask my patients if a point is tender, or if my holding a point relieves their pain. I think of it in terms of the point location being the address, and I feel to find the exact front door. Feedback is important in guiding the treatment, along with changes to the patient's pulse. The pulse is taken several times during the treatment to gauge the response the treatment is achieving.
Japanese acupuncture uses very thin needles and inserts them more shallowly. At times a round headed needle and other tools are also used on the skin's surface. Often the patient doesn't feel the same type of needle sensation as in Chinese style acupuncture. Throughout the treatment there may be no sensation, an itchiness, ache, or awareness of movement between the points. Just because you don't "feel it," doesn't mean that it isn't having profound effects however. At the end of your appointment I will demonstrate pressure points that you can use to help your symptoms between visits. This subtle style reminds the body of the health it was designed to have in a gentle, comfortable way. If you are needle sensitive, weak, or nervous about acupuncture, my style might be the right fit for you.
