Fire Fit Kids

There is nothing that 2BWell enjoys more that sharing the gift of health. Last month, 2BWell had an excellent opportunity to share our passion of health and give back to our community through participation in Lake Oswego's Fire Fit Kids.
Fire Fit Kids is a community outreach event hosted and sponsored by the Lake Oswego Fire Department at Westlake Fire Station. The event took place August 13, 2011 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Fire fighters showed children the importance of exercise and staying in shape. Children were led through a brief warm-up period consisting of calisthenics and ballistic exercise that was followed by an action-packed, age-appropriate obstacle courses and friendly competition. Those brave enough (and old enough) suited up in fireman gear and attempted the actual course that the real firefighters train on.
To compliment the exercise portion, 2BWell's dietitian provided a brief discussion on nutrition. The children enjoyed a presentation on eating healthy to support growth by following the USDA's food pyramid. Very knowledgeable of the food pyramid, the children enthusiastically interacted by naming good whole-food sources of each food group. Parents and children alike were then encouraged to visit the nutrition booth where useful handouts, recipes and more information were provided. All attendees then sampled an array of healthy snacks and water to reinforce what was learnt during the nutrition discussion.
Tours of the firehouse and picture opportunities with the firemen and trucks were also available.
Overall, a total of 85 children from Lake Oswego attended the event. Far exceeding attendance of previous years, children went home with a reinforced view of how diet and exercise positively impacts lifestyles.
